About Course

Year 11 English Language focuses on exam mastery, advanced reading and writing skills, and confident spoken communication. Students refine analytical techniques, develop clear and persuasive writing styles, and prepare intensively for GCSE Papers 1 & 2 and the Spoken Language endorsement.
Course Objectives
By the end of Year 11, students will be able to:
Analyse unseen fiction and non-fiction texts confidently
Identify and explain language and structural techniques
Write accurate, effective, and engaging texts for purpose and audience
Use ambitious vocabulary and varied sentence structures
Apply correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar
Respond effectively under exam conditions

Course Content

AUTUMN TERM
Focus: Consolidating reading and writing skills for GCSE readiness, developing exam technique, improving grammar, vocabulary, and stylistic awareness, and building analytical and creative writing abilities.

  • Week 2 – Reading: Understanding Explicit & Implicit Meaning
  • Week 3 – Language Techniques for Analysis
  • Week 4 – Structure in Texts
  • Week 5 – Comparing Texts
  • Week 6 – Creative Writing: Narrative Techniques
  • Week 7 – Non-Fiction Writing: Persuasion & Argument
  • Week 8 – SPaG Mastery: Grammar & Punctuation
  • Week 9 – Reading: Exploring Tone and Style
  • Week 10 – Transactional Writing: Letters & Speeches
  • Week 11 – Exam Practice: Timed Reading & Writing
  • Week 12 – Review & Reflection

SPRING TERM
Focus: Consolidates reading, writing, and SPaG skills while developing exam-ready techniques

SUMMER TERM
Focus: The Summer Term is dedicated to exam preparation and consolidation
