About Course

Year 11 Coding focuses on mastery of programming fundamentals, structured problem-solving, and confident exam performance. Students move beyond syntax to writing clear, efficient, and well-tested programs, while learning how to explain, trace, and debug code under exam conditions.
Course Objectives
By the end of Year 11, students will be able to:
Design algorithms to solve real problems
Write structured programs using a text-based language (Python)
Use selection, iteration, and data structures effectively
Test, debug, and improve programs
Explain program logic clearly in exams

Course Content

AUTUMN TERM
Focus: Consolidate Year 10 coding knowledge Advanced Python/JavaScript/Java concepts (depending on exam board) Build exam-ready problem-solving and algorithmic thinking Introduce timed mini-projects and debugging strategies

  • Week 1 – Diagnostic Assessment & Term Planning
  • Week 2 – Variables, Data Types, and Input/Output
  • Week 3 – Conditional Statements (if, elif, else)
  • Week 4 – Loops: for and while
  • Week 5 – Functions & Modular Programming
  • Week 6 – Arrays/Lists and Dictionaries/Objects
  • Week 7 – File Handling & Data Persistence
  • Week 8 – Debugging & Problem-Solving
  • Week 9 – Timed Past-Paper Mini-Projects 1
  • Week 10 – Timed Past-Paper Mini-Projects 2
  • Week 11 – Integrated Revision & Targeted Practice
  • Week 12 – Final Project & Term Consolidation

SPRING TERM
Focus: Exam-focused timed projects and past-paper simulations Multi-step problem-solving, debugging, and optimization Consolidation of all Autumn Term topics Preparation for final GCSE coding exams/projects Emphasis on SPaG-style explanations and clean, readable code

SUMMER TERM
Focus: Final consolidation of all coding skills Timed past-paper simulations and full projects Multi-step problem-solving and debugging under exam conditions SPaG-focused documentation and coding clarity Prepare students for final GCSE coding exams and projects
