About Course

The English Literacy course introduces young learners to the joy of stories, poems, rhymes, and picture books. Through shared reading, storytelling, drama, and discussion, children explore characters, settings, and simple story sequences. The course nurtures imagination, listening skills, emotional understanding, and a lifelong love for books while supporting early language development.

AUTUMN TERM
Early reading comprehension, speaking & listening, mark-making & emergent writing, vocabulary building.

Week 1: Storytime routines & listening skills
Week 2: Name recognition & mark-making
Week 3: Vocabulary building & describing words
Week 4: Early comprehension: Who/What/Where
Week 5: Mark-making to early writing (caption writing)
Week 6: Story sequencing: beginning, middle, end
Week 7: Role-play & talk for writing
Week 8: Early punctuation & sentence structure
Week 9: Guided reading groups (decodable focus)
Week 10: Term review & literacy showcase

SPRING TERM
Confident CVC reading → simple sentence writing, story sequencing, retelling & role-play.

Week 1: Extend reading stamina & story prediction
Week 2: Sentence building & conjunctions (and)
Week 3: Character & setting understanding
Week 4: Non-fiction introduction: label & captions
Week 5: Guided writing: sequence a short process
Week 6: Poetry & rhythm
Week 7: Comprehension: answering how/why
Week 8: Independent writing: short story attempt
Week 9: Read-for-purpose: information retrieval
Week 10: Term review & parent reading notes

SUMMER TERM
Reading fluency, independent short sentence writing, basic punctuation, show-and-tell / presentation skills.
