About Course

The Handwriting and Penmanship course helps Year 1 learners develop clear, neat, and confident handwriting. Pupils are taught correct pencil grip, letter formation, spacing, and alignment through guided practice and structured activities. The course strengthens fine motor skills while encouraging pride in written work and good writing habits.

Correct pencil grip and writing posture
Formation of upper- and lowercase letters
Writing letters on the line with correct spacing
Introduction to joining letters (where appropriate)

Theme: Correct Grip, Letter Formation & Writing Confidence

  • Week 1: Pencil Grip & Sitting Position
  • Week 2: Pre-Writing Patterns
  • Week 3: Lowercase Letters (a, c, o, d, g, q)
  • Week 4: Lowercase Letters (i, l, t, k)
  • Week 5: Lowercase Letters (m, n, r, u)
  • Week 6: Lowercase Letters (h, b, p)
  • Week 7: Lowercase Letters (j, y, f)
  • Week 8: Basic Word Formation
  • Week 9: Writing Simple Sentences
  • Week 10: Assessment & Fun Writing Activities

Theme: Capital Letters & Neatness

SUMMER TERM
Theme: Fluency, Speed & Style
