About Course

The Literacy course in Year 1 develops pupils’ reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills through structured lessons and creative activities. Children build on their phonics knowledge to read and write increasingly complex words and sentences. The course encourages comprehension, storytelling, vocabulary growth, and confident expression, fostering a love for language and communication.
Key Focus Areas
Reading simple texts with fluency and understanding
Writing short sentences with correct punctuation and spacing
Expanding vocabulary and using descriptive language
Listening and responding to stories, instructions, and discussions
Retelling stories, expressing ideas, and sequencing events
Beginning to plan and organize ideas for writing

AUTUMN TERM
Focus Areas: Early reading fluency, Basic sentence writing, Capital letters & full stops, Common exception words (CEWs), Story structure (beginning–middle–end)

  • WEEK 1: Sentences & Capital Letters
  • WEEK 2: Full Stops & Finger Spaces
  • WEEK 3: Naming Words (Nouns)
  • WEEK 4: Action Words (Verbs)
  • WEEK 5: Describing Words (Adjectives)
  • WEEK 6: Simple Story Structure (Beginning)
  • WEEK 7: Middle of a Story
  • WEEK 8: Ending of a Story
  • WEEK 9: Common Exception Words (Set 1)
  • WEEK 10: Reading & Retelling a Simple Story

SPRING TERM
Focus: Building confident readers & beginning writers

SUMMER TERM
Focus: More confident readers and emerging writers
