About Course

The English Language and Literacy course in Year 4 develops pupils’ ability to read, write, speak, and listen with increasing fluency, accuracy, and confidence. Pupils engage with a wider range of texts, deepen comprehension skills, and produce well-organised written work for different purposes and audiences. The course strengthens grammar, vocabulary, and spelling while encouraging critical thinking, creativity, and effective communication.
Key Focus Areas
Reading a wide range of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry
Advanced comprehension skills: inference, prediction, summarising, and evaluation
Writing structured paragraphs and multi-paragraph texts
Using varied sentence structures and richer vocabulary
Accurate use of grammar, punctuation, and spelling
Planning, drafting, editing, and improving written work
Speaking clearly in discussions, debates, and presentations
Listening attentively and responding thoughtfully.

  • Week 7: Punctuation – Commas and Apostrophes
  • Week 8: Writing – Narrative (Story Writing)
  • Week 9: Reading – Inference Skills
  • Week 10: Review and assessment

SPRING TERM
Focus: Vocabulary and Advanced Grammar

SUMMER TERM
Overall Focus: To develop confident, fluent readers and writers who can write for different purposes, understand a range of texts, and use grammar and punctuation accurately and creatively.
