About Course

The Mathematics course in Year 4 develops pupils’ fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills across number, measurement, geometry, and data. Building on earlier learning, pupils deepen their understanding of calculations, fractions, and mathematical relationships, and apply these skills confidently in real-life and cross-curricular contexts. The course encourages logical thinking, perseverance, and accuracy.
Key Focus Areas
Place value up to at least 10,000
Efficient use of the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
Multiplication tables fluency (up to 12 × 12)
Fractions and decimals, including equivalence and comparison
Measurement: length, mass, capacity, time, and perimeter
Geometry: properties of shapes, angles, symmetry, and position
Data handling: interpreting charts, tables, and graphs
Mathematical reasoning and multi-step problem-solving

AUTUMN TERM
Overall Focus: Place Value, Number Sense, Addition and Subtraction, Mental Maths

  • Week 1: Place Value – Numbers to 10,000
  • Week 2: Comparing & Ordering Numbers
  • Week 3: Rounding Numbers
  • Week 4: Addition – Mental Strategies
  • Week 5: Addition – Written Methods
  • Week 6: Subtraction – Mental Strategies
  • Week 7: Subtraction – Written Methods
  • Week 8: Word problems (Addition & Subtraction)
  • Week 9: Mental Maths & Estimation
  • Week 10: Revision and Assessment

SPRING TERM
Focus: Fractions, Decimals, Money, Time, Measurement and Problem Solving Approach: Concrete → Pictorial → Abstract (CPA) Each week includes definitions, explanations, examples, class activities, and homework.

SUMMER TERM
Term Focus: Consolidation, problem solving, real-life application, transition readiness
