About Course

The Phonics course introduces Reception learners to the relationship between sounds and letters. Through songs, stories, games, and hands-on activities, children learn to recognize letter sounds, blend sounds to read simple words, and begin segmenting sounds for spelling. The course builds strong early reading skills while fostering enjoyment and confidence in learning to read.

Course Content

AUTUMN TERM
Phase 1 listening + Phase 2 (sets 1–3). Focus: letter–sound correspondences, oral blending & segmenting, simple CVC reading

Week 1: Intro to Phase 1: Listening & Alliteration
Week 2: Phase 1: Voice sounds & Rhythm
Week 3: Phase 1: Oral blending practice
Week 4: Phase 2: Introduce Set 1 (s,a,t,p)
Week 5: Phase 2: Set 2 (i,n,m,d)
Week 6: Phase 2: Set 3 (g,o,c,k)
Week 7: Phonics consolidation & tricky words intro
Week 8: Blending & segmenting practice (oral → written)
Week 9: Reading short decodable captions
Week 10: End-of-term review & fun phonics assessment

SPRING TERM
Finish Phase 2 (sets 4–5) → Phase 3 digraphs/trigraphs. Focus: reading short captions, writing simple CVC/CVCC words.

Week 1: Consolidate Phase 2 sets 4–5 (ck,e,u,r & h,b,f,ff,l,ll,ss)
Week 2: Phase 2 → reading captions & CVCC practice
Week 3: Phase 3 intro: ch, sh, th, ng
Week 4: Phase 3 vowels: ai, ee, igh, oa
Week 5: Phase 3 continued: oo, ar, or, ur
Week 6: Phase 3 consonant blends & reading practice
Week 7: Tricky words consolidation (he, she, we, me, be)
Week 8: Early sentence reading & punctuation
Week 9: Apply phonics to writing (dictation & story)
Week 10: Term review & assessment

SUMMER TERM
Consolidate Phase 3, introduce Phase 4 blending CCVC/CVCC words and independent simple sentence reading/writing.

Week 1: Consolidate Phase 3 digraphs/trigraphs
Week 2: Phase 4 intro: CCVC words (stop, frog)
Week 3: CVCC & CCVCC practice (lamp, stamp)
Week 4: Tricky word expansion (said, have, some, come)
Week 5: Reading short sentences & early comprehension
Week 6: Writing short sentences independently
Week 7: Reading fluency & expression
Week 8: Spelling simple words & applying phonics
Week 9: Consolidation: Apply phonics across curriculum
Week 10: End-of-year phonics review & report
