About Course
The Phonics course in Year 1 builds on the foundational sound knowledge developed in Reception. Pupils learn to read and spell using a wider range of letter–sound relationships, including digraphs and trigraphs. Through daily structured lessons and engaging activities, children develop fluency in blending for reading and segmenting for spelling, supporting confident reading and accurate writing.

Revision and consolidation of basic letter sounds
Learning new sounds, including digraphs and trigraphs
Blending sounds to read words and simple sentences
Segmenting sounds to spell words
Reading common exception (tricky) words
