About Course

The Science course in Year 2 builds on pupils’ curiosity and observation skills developed in earlier years. Learners explore living things, materials, and everyday scientific phenomena through guided investigations, experiments, and discussions. The course encourages pupils to ask questions, make simple predictions, record observations, and explain their findings using appropriate scientific language.

Growth, survival, and habitats
Uses and properties of everyday materials
Changes in materials (melting, freezing, bending)
Health, hygiene, and basic human needs

AUTUMN TERM
Unit Focus: Living Things & Habitats

  • Week 1: What makes something alive?
  • Week 2: Basic needs of animals
  • Week 3: Basic needs of humans
  • Week 4: Types of animals (mammals, birds, fish…)
  • Week 5: Animal habitats (land, water, air)
  • Week 6: Food chains (simple)
  • Week 7: Plants: parts & functions
  • Week 8: What plants need to grow
  • Week 9: Seasonal changes (autumn to winter)
  • Week 10: Assessment

Unit Focus: Materials & Their Properties

Unit Focus: The Human Body, Health & Environment
